Sumiyoshi Shrine

Believed to have been founded approximately 2,400 years ago, this ancient shrine ranks among the oldest in all of Japan. It stands on a sacred site where, according to Japanese mythology, a deity purified themselves in the pond, and it is dedicated to the three divine beings who were born from that ritual. Drawing on these origins, the shrine is famous today as a powerful spiritual site for warding off misfortune and praying for health and long life. Deep within its grounds, the Tsukimigaoka Plum Grove puts on a stunning display of crimson plum blossoms from late January through mid-February. Come and enjoy the vivid splash of red flowers and their delicate fragrance, signaling the end of winter.
