The Devil's Washboard The Devil's Washboard

Stretching along the coast near Aoshima, this remarkable rock platform is one of the rarest geological formations in the world. The rock surface is carved with neat, regular grooves that resemble the ridges of a giant washboard, giving it its name. Shaped over millions of years by the powerful erosion of ocean waves and tectonic uplift, this natural masterpiece is designated a National Natural Monument and extends for approximately 8 kilometers.
On clear days, the rugged rock face shines beautifully next to the blue sea; on stormy days, dramatic sheets of spray rise with breathtaking force. The scenery changes with every season and every hour, offering something new each time you visit.
