Pile up stones while imagining the myths of the gods!
This shrine is where the amano-iwato hiraki, one of the most famous stories from Japanese mythology is said to have taken place. The cave where Amaterasu-oomikami hid from the world is the main object of worship and is represented by the western shrine, where the eastern shrine was built to worship the place where Amaterasu-oomikami lived after emerging from the cave. After paying your respects at the western shrine, take a walk down to the Amano-yasukawara. Head over to the eastern shrine by car and pay your respects there too. There is a sacred water spring at the back of the shrine where you can recharge your spirit and soak up the power of this location. Another power spot at the eastern shrine are the 7 Japanese cedar trees that are joined by their roots. These trees are adorned with a Shimenawa rope that is unique to the Takachiho area and is well worth a visit.
Amano-yasukawara: The place where the gods held their first meeting
The place where all the gods of the land (Yaoyorozu no kami) gathered to discuss how to get Amaterasu-oomikami to leave her hiding place. Walk down the path and walk over the arched bridge that is said to be the entrance into the gods realm. The cave and torii gate that come into view as you walk along this path is a truly spiritual sight.

Takachiho Gorge: Power charge and reset
A mysteriously beautiful gorge
The Takachiho gorge was formed by flowing larva that came flowing out of the Aso Volcano in ancient times. The vertical cliffs that were created from this event, stand over 80m tall and span a length of over 7 kilometers from east to west. There are many interesting things to check out along the walking course with scenic lookouts and notable locations related to Japanese mythology such as Onokoro island, Tsukigata, and Kihachi-no-chikara-ishi. The Manaino falls, which was selected among the top 100 waterfalls in Japan, can be viewed up-close if you rent a rowboat to explore the gorge. This is a very popular activity for tourists who visit the area. A location that is registered as a national natural monument for its scenic beauty, this is a scenic power spot that you shouldn’t miss.
