Walking through Miyazaki‘s kitchen. Experience local food at the Kankan Market.

The Miyazaki City Central Wholesale Market is the largest wholesale market in Miyazaki Prefecture. It is fondly referred to as “Miyazaki’s kitchen.” It serves as a major distribution hub where fresh produce from around the prefecture can be found.
Within the market grounds is the Kankan-dori Shopping Street, an area of the market that general visitors can casually enjoy. About 30 shops line the street, including seafood processors, butchers, delicatessens, restaurants, and general goods stores, which have a nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere.

This shopping street becomes especially lively during the Kankan Market, held every Saturday. Large crowds gather from early in the morning, looking for special deals on fresh local ingredients and freshly prepared gourmet foods. Although the market is held every week, it feels more like a local food festival.

The Kankan Market is known for its wide variety of hot pot dishes. Gyoza dumpling soup, kitsune (sweet tofu) udon, pork and vegetable miso soup, and many more varieties are offered at affordable prices ranging from 100 to 250 yen. The clouds of steam and inviting aromas really stimulate your appetite. Enjoying a warm bowl of soup in the crisp morning air is a local experience that is sure to become a memorable part of your trip.

A popular stand that always has a line from before opening is the Okazaki Farm delicatessen. They offer generous portions of crispy deep-fried foods such as chicken wings for 480 yen a pack and crispy chicken skin for just 100 yen a pack. You’ll also find freshly made tonkatsu (pork cutlets) and croquettes among other fried goodies, which you can enjoy straight out of the fryer.

Another charm of the Kankan Market is the variety of fresh, market-inspired dishes that highlight the incredible freshness of the produce on sale. Donut Shop 841 @sky offers several types of salad bowls made with fresh local vegetables. Meanwhile, Sweets Sweets serves up refreshing cuts of pineapple and fresh juices, perfect for a sweet but healthy treat.

In recent years, new stores have popped up alongside the long-established shops,  including trendy offerings like nama-donuts. Another unique product to try is Hina Ten from Mahana Shoten. Priced at 300 yen for five pieces, this tempura dish is made from a fish paste made with leftover local fish from the market. They’ve become incredibly popular as part of the "sustainable Miyazaki cuisine" movement, which focuses on environmentally conscious food choices.
