The Icchaga Miyazaki Kusunamiki Morning Market is a lively open-air market held on Kusunamiki Street in front of the Miyazaki Prefectural Office. The street is closed to traffic and transformed into a pedestrian-only zone from 8:00 a.m. to noon on the first and third Sunday of each month. Stretching for about 650 meters, the avenue is lined with dense camphor trees that are more than 100 years old, and stalls fill both sides of the road. Some vendors sell their goods directly from the rear beds of small trucks, while others set up tents, creating a vibrant, bustling atmosphere like a farmers’ market.
Vendors come not only from Miyazaki City, but from across the prefecture, including Nobeoka, Ebino, Aya, Miyakonojo, and Nichinan. Bringing together a selection of the freshest produce in Miyazaki.
The market offers a wide selection of fresh vegetables and fruit, along with ready-to-eat foods perfect for snacking as you explore. You’ll also find delicately crafted sweets, specialty coffee, and bento lunch boxes made with high-quality ingredients. Some stalls grill eel, ayu sweetfish, or chicken over charcoal right on the spot, filling the air with irresistible aromas. Being able to enjoy food hot and freshly prepared is one of the market’s biggest draws. There are even vendors demonstrating the traditional method of making soba noodles.
Many of these regional products would usually require a long drive to purchase, but at this morning market, you can find them all in one place. Although the market officially opens at 8:00 a.m., it’s so popular that devoted fans often line up at their favorite stalls well before opening time. Approximately 50 vendors participate, and the lineup changes seasonally, depending on what produce is in season. One standout at the November market was Shimada Farm from Kunitomi Town, making its first appearance with Jinenjo, a prized wild mountain yam. They offered samples of both the yams and their small bulbils (mukago), while introducing visitors to their rich flavor.
For travelers, one of the best ways to enjoy the market is to have breakfast here. Some stalls let you toast thick slices of bread to your liking, while others serve freshly brewed coffee made from carefully selected beans. You’ll also find freshly baked bread, bagels, waffles, scones, rice balls, seafood deep-fried on the spot, and Miyazaki’s local specialty ebi lettuce rolls (shrimp and lettuce sushi rolls). Many vendors only accept cash, so it’s a good idea to come prepared. You can also check the market’s Instagram account in advance to see which vendors will be there and plan your visit ahead of time.
Adding to the festive mood, the market often features a parade of Hyottoko Odori, a traditional Miyazaki folk dance. Performers wear bright red costumes and comical Hyottoko masks as they dance their way down Kusunamiki Street. The cheerful performance perfectly captures Miyazaki’s warm, easygoing attitude.
