Udo Shrine


The Udo Shrine on the Udozaki headland is located in a cliff cave, facing toward the sea. The enshrined deity is Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, the father of Emperor Jimmu. Also known as a shrine to the god of marriage.

Shanshan Horse Ride

Until the beginning of the Taisho era, newlyweds  from the around the Miyazaki City area, there was the tradition of “Udo-san mairi”. After finishing their shrine visit, relatives greeted them with a “Shanshan horse” - a horse decorated with bells. The bride would get on and then be taken home. At present this event can be seen in Miyazaki City and Nichinan City.
