Japanese Spiny Lobster

Japanese Spiny Lobster

Japanese spiny lobster can be found as far north as Chiba and as far south as Okinawa, along the Pacific Ocean coast where the Kuroshio Current flows. Also, there are a large amount found throughout Kyushu, yet they are said not to exist on the Sea of Japan coast and in quiet bays. The spiny lobsters caught in Miyazaki have a high rating and so a lot are shipped outside of the prefecture.

In Miyazaki, there is a ban on fishing for spiny lobster in September. At dusk, fisherman set up a net called an “isodateami”, that is similar to a tennis net, around rocky shores and catch those spiny lobster that become entangled. It is said that a slightly rough conditions yield a better catch than gentle conditions.

The takings at Aoshima fishing port are well known throughout Japan under the name of “Aoshima dore”.
